The Thankful Leper

[Song] “Sing them over again to me, wonderful words of life.  Let me more of their beauty see, wonderful words of life.”

Hello, my name is Miss Barb!  Welcome to Lifeline English, the podcast that helps you know God and know English.

You can read the written script for today’s lesson online at lifelineenglish.com.

Today I have three new words for you.  Ready?

The first word is leprosy.  Can you say it?  Lep-ro-sy.  Good job!  Leprosy is a very bad disease. It is also called Hansen’s disease.  People who have leprosy are called “lepers”.  Leprosy deadens nerves so that the lepers can no longer feel pain.  Lepers sometimes lose their fingers, toes, or even hands, feet and noses, because they cannot feel pain.

The next word is priest.  A priest is a person who helps other people know and worship God.  Before Jesus came, God used priests to help His people.  The priests helped the people to be forgiven by God, to worship God, and to obey God.  They also examined people who had diseases, to stop their diseases from spreading to other people.

The last word today is foreigner.  Repeat after me.  For-eign-er.  Good!  A foreigner is a person from a different country.  Many foreigners come to the United States to find work.  But some foreigners come to cause problems.  Some people are afraid of foreigners.

Okay, ready for the story?  It’s called, “The Thankful Leper”.

When I ask a question, I will leave a space.  You can answer my question.  Then I will say the answer.  You can compare your answer with my answer.

Ten men with leprosy met Jesus.
Who did they meet?  They met Jesus.
Who met Jesus?  Ten men met Jesus.
How many men met Jesus?  Ten.
Did the men have cancer?  No, the men had leprosy.  They were lepers.
Did Jesus have leprosy?  No, Jesus did not have leprosy.

They yelled from a distance, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!”Did the men stay far from Jesus?  Yes, the men stayed at a distance.  Because the men had leprosy, they were not allowed to come close to people.  They had to stay far away so that other people would not get their disease.
Did the men talk loudly to Jesus?  Yes, the men yelled to Jesus.
What did the men want from Jesus?  The men wanted mercy from Jesus.
Did the men ask Jesus to heal them?  No, the men asked Jesus to have mercy on them.
What did the men call Jesus?  The men called Jesus, “Master”.  The men knew that Jesus had authority.

Jesus saw them. He said, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.”

Did Jesus touch the men?  No, Jesus did not touch the men.
Did Jesus talk to the men?  Yes, Jesus talked to the men.
What did Jesus tell the men to do?  Jesus told the men to go and show themselves to the priests.  When a leper was healed, he had to go to the priests.  The priests would examine him.  If the leper was healed, the priests would permit the man to live close to people.  There was no more danger of his leprosy spreading to other people.

While the ten men were going, they were healed.
How many men went?  All ten men went.
Where did the men go?  The men went to the priests.
Why did the men go to the priests?  The men went to the priests because Jesus told them to go.  The men were obeying Jesus. The priests would see if the men were healed.
Was Jesus healed?  No, Jesus was not sick.  The men were healed.
Who healed the men?  Jesus healed the men.
How many men were healed?  All ten men were healed.
Were the men healed before they started walking? No, they were not healed before they started walking.
When were the men healed?  The men were healed while they were going.

One of the men went back to Jesus.
How many men went back?  One man went back.
Where did the man go?  He went back to Jesus.

The man praised God loudly.
Who did the man praise?  The man praised God.
How did the man praise God?  The man praised God loudly.

He fell down in front of Jesus to thank Him.
Who fell down? The man fell down.
Where did the man fall down?  The man fell down in front of Jesus.
Why did the man fall down?  The man fell down in front of Jesus to thank Him.
Whom did the man thank?  The man thanked Jesus.
Why did the man thank Jesus?  The man thanked Jesus because Jesus healed him.

The man was a foreigner.
Was the man a Jew?  No, the man was a foreigner.
Was Jesus a Jew?  Yes, Jesus was a Jew.
God gave His book to Jews so that they could know Him and worship Him.  God did not give His book to foreigners.

Jesus said, “Weren’t all ten healed?  Where are the other nine? Only a foreigner came back to praise God?”How many men did not come back?  Nine men did not come back.
Were the nine men healed?  Yes, the nine men were healed.  All ten were healed.
Which man came back?  A foreigner came back.
Why did the foreigner come back?  The foreigner came back to thank God.
Did the nine Jews come back to thank their God?  No, the nine Jews did not come back.
Did the foreigner come back to thank the Jews’ God?  Yes, the foreigner came back.

Then Jesus said to the man, “Get up and go.”
Who spoke? Jesus spoke.

Did Jesus ask the man for money?  No, Jesus did not ask the man for money.
What did Jesus tell the man to do?  Jesus told the man to get up and go.

“Your faith has healed you.”
What healed the man?  His faith healed him.
Whose faith healed the man?  The man’s faith healed him.
Who did the man have faith in?  The man had faith in Jesus.
Should we have faith in Jesus?  Yes, we should have faith in Jesus.

Let’s listen to the whole story together.

Ten men with leprosy met Jesus.  They yelled from a distance, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!”
Jesus saw them.  He said, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.”
While the ten men were going, they were healed.
One of the men went back to Jesus. The man praised God loudly. He fell down in front of Jesus to thank Him. The man was a foreigner.
Jesus said, “Weren’t all ten healed? Where are the other nine? Only a foreigner came back to praise God?”
Then Jesus said to the man, “Get up and go. Your faith has healed you.”

This story is in the third person, past tense.  I will tell it to you again.  This time, it will be in the present tense, first person.  It will be as if the foreigner is telling the story.

Ten of us with leprosy meet Jesus.  We yell from a distance, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!”
Jesus sees us.  He says, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.”
While the ten of us are going, we are healed.
I go back to Jesus. I praise God loudly. I fall down in front of Jesus to thank Him. I am a foreigner.
Jesus says, “Weren’t all ten healed? Where are the other nine? Only a foreigner came back to praise God?”
Then Jesus says to me, “Get up and go. Your faith has healed you.”

The nine men obeyed Jesus to get healed.  They loved being healed more than they loved Jesus. The foreign man loved Jesus more than he loved being healed.  He came back to thank Jesus.

Why do you obey God?  Do you love God?  Or do you love the nice things God does for you?  Who do you love most?  Can you sing this song with me?

I love you Lord
And I lift my voice
To worship You.
O, my soul, rejoice!
Take joy my King
In what You hear.
May it be a sweet, sweet sound
In Your ear.

Do you have any questions?  I would love to hear from you.  You can write me.  Go to our website, lifelineenglish.com.  Your message would be a sweet sound in my ear!

Until next time, may Jesus help you know Him and know English.  Good bye!

[Song] “Jesus only savior, sanctify forever, beautiful words, wonderful words, wonderful words of life.  Beautiful words, wonderful words, wonderful words of life.”
